Intern & Earn Program
Intern & Earn is an ongoing program available to CalWORKs youth. The initiative is designed to reduce the effects of generational poverty by providing low-income and disadvantaged youth with employment-based opportunities that foster safety, career exploration, and exposure to public service.
The program is available year-round during designated cohorts, with each cohort duration being up to 8 weeks. The first week of each cohort will provide an onboarding workshop, followed by seven weeks of on the job training (OJT).
Refer to CWES Handbook Chapter 22 Intern & Earn Program for more information.
Earnings
The County of Santa Clara Social Services Agency is the employer of record and is responsible for all job development, placement, and payroll responsibilities. Positions provide up to 30 hours of work each week for up to 8 weeks at a time, at a pre-approved hourly rate.
Earnings from the Intern & Earn program are exempt for CalWORKs if the youth is:
- Under the age of 19,
- A full-time student, or
- Has a school schedule equal to at least one half of a full-time curriculum and is not employed full-time.
