Unemployment Insurance Benefits/Disability Insurance Benefits
Applicants and beneficiaries may qualify for Unemployment Insurance Benefits (UIB) and Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB) from the Employment Development Department (EDD). Beginning June 1, 2025, applying for UIB and DIB is no longer a condition of eligibility for the Medi-Cal program.
Although applicants and members are no longer required to apply for these type of income, staff should continue to educate them about available income benefits they may be potentially eligible for.
Individuals may be eligible for UIB payments if they:
- Have a work history in the past 19 months, and
- Are currently unemployed, and
- Earned at least $1,200 in a 12-month period, or at least $900 if accumulated in at least 8 separarte weeks of at least $20 each.
Individuals may be eligible for DIB if they:
- Have a work history in the last 19 months, and
- Are currently disabled or unable to work due to pregnancy/childbirth, and
- Earned at least $300 in a 12-month base period.
UIB/DIB income can be verified by a Notice of Computation, Denial of Benefits letter, current benefit check, a letter from a UI/DI office stating the client has a pending application, or any other communication from the appropriate UI/DI office showing the application status or benefit amount.
