Share of Cost
A share of cost (SOC) is the amount of the family’s net countable income which exceeds the monthly maintenance need level for the size of the Medi-Cal Family Budget Unit (MFBU).
An individual’s or family’s monthly SOC must be paid (or obligated to pay) toward the cost of health care services/prescriptions received before Medi-Cal will pay the provider for the remaining amount of the bill.
When SOC is Determined
CalSAWS will determine the SOC:
- At application
- When there is a change in income or income deductions
- When there is a change in the size of the MFBU
- When there is a change in any other eligibility factors affecting the SOC.
