Single Name Functionality
Individuals may have a legal single name listed as Last Name only on their SSN card and their First Name is left blank or listed as FNU (First Name Unknown). In order to complete Social Security Number (SSN) data match with the Social Security Administration (SSA), MEDS will accept the following valid value for first name, "FNU", "#" (pound sign), "-" (hyphen). However, CalSAWS only accepts FNU and hyphen value.
Staff should use only FNU value under the First Name field on Individual Demographics Detail page in CalSAWS during the Application Registration or Adding a Person, so the First Name field in MEDS will show blank.
Note: The following workaround is to be used when client requests FNU to display as First Name on the BIC.
-
Request MTO to complete an EW12 online transaction and input “F N U” with spaces for the First Name and the Last Name for the Last Name, e.g. "F N U SMITH".
-
Once the EW12 has successfully updated MEDS, ask MTO to complete an EW45 online transaction to request a new BIC for the client.
