HIC-NO

Health Insurance Claim Number. This data element identifies the claim number that the recipient uses for claiming Medicare, Buy-In or Railroad Retirement (RR) benefits.

The HIC number contains a nine-digit number plus a suffix of one to three characters. If the letter 'H' appears in the first position of a HIC suffix (e.g., HA, HB, HC1), it indicates the claimant is being paid through the SSA disability program.

Note: If the last HIC number digit is a letter, it will need to be capitalized when entered in CalSAWS, otherwise MEDS alert will be generated.

Most RR numbers consist of a prefix of one to three characters and a six-digit number issued by the Railroad Retirement Board. Other RR numbers consist of a prefix of one to three characters and the beneficiary’s SSN.

Note: Beginning in April 2018, HIC-NO/Health Insurance Claim #) field name will change to Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI)/Medicare Beneficiary ID.
