Data Element Dictionary Overview

Data Element is a defined and uniquely named unit of information used by or maintained in the MEDS Network. The main purpose of the DED is to assist MEDS Network users understand the meaning of each data element, how the element is used, and how it relates to other elements.

The Data Elements are listed alphabetically by its MEDS NETWORK NAME (the label used to identify the element, e.g., COUNTY-ID). Each MEDS Network Name contains the following information:

  • NARRATIVE NAME (the common description name, e.g., County Identification Number),
  • DEFINITION (the meaning of the element as it is used by the MEDS Network), and if applicable,
  • VALUES/CODES (a list of values/codes, their meaning and if appropriate, the source).

For data elements not found in the dictionary, contact the MEDS Coordinator via the District Office MEDS Liaison.
