ABAWD Exemptions

CF benefit recipients may be exempted (excused) from the ABAWD time limit if they meet any of the following criteria: 

  • Age: An individual is exempt if they are under 18 or over 64 years of age.
  • Physical or mental inability: An individual is exempt if they are medically certified as physically or mentally unfit for employment.
  • Caring for a dependent: An individual is exempt if they are responsible for a dependent child under 14 years of age.
  • Pregnancy: An individual is exempt if they are pregnant.
  • Exempt from general CalFresh work requirements: Most individuals who are exempt from general CalFresh work requirements are also exempt from the ABAWD time limit.
  • Native Americans: Native Americans, also referred to Alaska Natives, Indigenous Peoples, and Tribal Members, are exempt from the ABAWD time limit.
