Juvenile Probation Department (JPD)

Juvenile probation departments may use a foster or group home as a sentencing option for minors who have committed a crime that is serious enough to handle formally but does not warrant a more restrictive placement in a juvenile detention facility. Minors may be placed in such homes when there is insufficient supervision at home to ensure successful probation services with the family of origin. The reason for placement is often related to family conditions similar to those found in families served by the child welfare system.

County placing agencies and juvenile probation are required to place minors in the least restrictive, most family-like setting possible. Depending on individual needs, a minor may be placed in the home of a relative, a county licensed foster family home, a foster home certified by a foster family agency, or a group home.

It is important that EW understand the terminology used by JPD in communicating activity in a JPD case. The following are the most common communications JPD sends to the EW.
