Social Security Number

SSNs must be verified at application by viewing the Social Security card. A copy of the card must be scanned to Imaging.

If the applicant’s SSN has been verified through MEDS/IEVS with a valid code, viewing the card is not necessary. [Refer to "SSN Verification Categories" in MEDS HB].

The method of SSN verification must be documented in a CalSAWS Journal Entry.

SSNs on paycheck stubs are not acceptable proof. Metal replicas of Social Security Cards are not issued by SSA and are not acceptable.

Applicants or recipients who do not have acceptable proof of their SSN must be referred to the Social Security Administration website to apply for new or replacement SSN card. [Refer to "How to Create an Online Account" in Common Place HB].

Individuals must be allowed a 60 day time limit to provide acceptable proof of Social Security Number. Individuals who fail to provide acceptable proof by the end of the 60-day limit, shall be discontinued for failure to provide information.
