Immediate Need and Expedited Services

CalWORKs Immediate Need (IN)

An IN is a cash benefit available to CalWORKs applicant families who have an emergency situation and insufficient funds to meet their needs. All CalWORKs applicants who meet the regulatory definition of IN must be interviewed by a worker no later than close of business on the following working day upon receipt of the application.

CalFresh Expedited Services (ES)

Expedited Services are immediate services provided to eligible CalFresh households identified as destitute. Benefits must be available by the third day following the date of application.

IN/ES Process

Applicants that have been approved by the screener for emergency services must be given a return appointment. The application must be reviewed for the type of approval based on the aid requested and schedules an appointment as follows:

  • If the application is for an Immediate Need (IN),
    • The appointment will be scheduled...Next day.
  • If the appointment is for an ES,
    • The appointment will be scheduled within 3 days.

  • Writes the appointment information on the SCD 41.
  • Completes an appointment letter with the worker number, name and phone number. Writes the appointment day, date and time.
