Burial Expense Payments
EAS Section 11- 420.2
When a foster parent or Kin-GAP legal guardian requests a funeral expense the cost of the funeral cannot exceed $7,500. The request must be paid as a special need with SSPM approval on an “DFCS Request Placement Expenses” (SCZ 414Z). The SCZ 414Z must provide the payee for the expense. Most of the time the expense will be paid directly to a funeral home.
- The funeral expense is a nonrecurring special need requested by the Social Worker and must be processed immediately.
- When the payment is made to a funeral home, the home must be added to the CalSAWS Resource Data Bank as a “Provider." The provider is added by sending the request to the FC Providers email box.
Payment Process
Once the approved SCZ 414Z is received with all the required signatures the payment is issued via the Needs List page in CalSAWS. In the Type drop-down list workers will choose "Burial." The FC EW will use the aid code that is associated with the case. The check or warrant is for “Office Pickup” and must be hand-delivered to the assigned SW as soon as possible.
All requests for Burial Expenses must be documented in a CalSAWS Journal. The documentation must include the payee, the amount, and the assigned SW that received the check or warrant.
