Definitions

Veteran

A veteran is an individual who has:

  • Been on “active duty” in the military; army, naval or air service. This also includes individuals in the National Guard, if they are called up for active duty.
  • A service connected disability, and has been discharged, or separated from active duty, or
  • Died while in the military.

Veteran's Dependent

Any individuals that fall into the following categories are considered to be a veteran’s dependent:

  • Spouse of the veteran, if:
    • Currently married or separated.
    • Divorced, but not remarried.
    • Legally married at the time of the veteran's death.
    • Divorced from the veteran and, any subsequent marriage(s) were terminated prior to the veteran's death.
  • Parents, or
  • Natural or legally adopted child(ren) or stepchild(ren).

County Veterans Service Office (CVSO)

The CVSO provides information and assistance for filing with the Veterans Administration claims for compensation, hospitalization, pensions, and other benefits which may be available to applicants or recipients for public assistance. [Refer to "Veterans Benefits" in the Common Place HB].
