Retirement, Survivors, Disability Insurance (RSDI)

RSDI is only available from the Social Security Administration to persons with the required work history and/or their dependents. These may be in the form of primary benefits for the wage earner, or auxiliary and survivors benefits, available to the dependent. There is also a burial benefit paid upon the death of the primary wage earner, if there is a surviving spouse and/or a dependent child.

Requirement to Apply

The applicant/recipient:

  • Must apply for and if eligible, accept any RSDI payments.
  • Is not eligible for GA if they do not cooperate with the Social Security Administration in processing the application and accepting any benefit they are eligible for.

[Refer to "RSDI Procedures" in the DEBS BP].

General Benefit Information

  • RSDI benefits are received monthly. They are usually received on the 3rd of each month. The client may have the amount automatically deposited in an account with a financial institution. Recurring monthly payments are unearned income and will be treated as such.
  • A RSDI overpayment adjustment amount is not to be included as a deduction in the financial eligibility determinations. The figure to be used is the gross benefit payment.
  • An individual may be employed and still receive RSDI. The maximum yearly earnings amount varies depending upon the age of the recipient. SSA should be contacted when more information or clarification is needed.
