Match Criteria Used by SSA

The criteria used by SSA to validate SSNs in the daily Validation Process differs somewhat from the criteria used in the IEVS Applicant (WTPY) process.

Refer to Common Place HB Chapter 2: Income Eligibility Verification System (IEVS), Validation for WTPY match criteria.

The match criteria for the daily SSN Validation Process is as follows:

SSN

Requires an EXACT match on the SSN (MEDS-ID).

If SSA FINDS AN SSN MATCH, A NAME MATCH IS THEN ATTEMPTED.

NAME

Requires an EXACT match on:

The first seven (7) characters of the Last Name, and
An exact match on the first character of the First Name, OR
The first four (4) characters of the Last Name, and
An exact match on the first four (4) characters of the First Name, OR
A one-letter difference or transposition of two adjacent letters in the first seven (7) characters of
the Last Name, and
An exact match on the first character of the First Name, OR
An extra or missing letter in the first seven (7) characters of the Last Name, and An exact match on the first character of the First Name.

IF, AND ONLY IF, A NAME MATCH IS FOUND, WILL THE SEX AND DOB MATCH BE ATTEMPTED.

DATE OF BIRTH

The DOB submitted by MEDS is considered to be a match if one of the following conditions is met:

Year of birth must match exactly (note that Century, Month and Day are disregarded), OR
Month of birth must match exactly and the year of birth is within plus or minus one year (note that Century and Day are disregarded).

IF A DOB MATCH IS FOUND, A SEX MATCH WILL BE ATTEMPTED.

SEX

The Sex code submitted from MEDS is considered to be a match if one of the following conditions is met:

A character of 'M' or 'F' appears in the Sex field, OR
MEDS has a Sex code of 'M' and SSA’s files show an 'M' or 'U' (U stands for Unknown), OR
MEDS has a Sex code of 'F' and SSA’s files show an 'F' or 'U'.
